Pinups for Pitbulls Bow Wow Luau 2018

This past Saturday, June 23rd, I had the pleasure of volunteering with Pinups for Pitbulls at the 2018 Bow Luau Fundraiser at Mother Pugs Saloon in Staten Island, NY. The fundraiser featured several local bands and vendors, as well as silent auctions. There was also a Miss Bow Wow Luau Pinup Contest (I was a contestant) and Best dressed (I WON)! All the money we raised goes back in to the Pinups for Pitbulls Nonprofit organization to help advocate and educate people on pitbull type dogs and other doesn’t that are discriminated against.  I made several new friends on the New York PFPB team and had a great time!

The dress I wore was custom made for me by Violets in May. I highly recommend her if you are looking for a custom made vintage inspired Hawaiian dress. I made the hair piece myself. My Flamingo earrings are from Summer Blue on Etsy.

Outfit of the Day

Outfits of the Day June 17th thru 21st

This week I got to wear some new dresses that I haven’t worn yet. It was very warm most days this week, so I was able to wear some sleeveless dresses.

Sunday, June 17, 2018

I bought this dress during the winter and was saving it for summer. I needed a purple halter swing dress in my life and Sunday was very warm, so I didn’t have to wear a cardigan!

I finished sewing another vintage skirt in this wonderful floral fabric, that I purchased from Affordable Fabrics in Uncasville, CT. The skirt Pattern is Simplicity 8446.

Friday was rainy and I was feeling lazy so I didn’t wear anything exciting or new.

Vintage Sewing

Vintage sewing – 1950s Simplicity Skirt 8446

I have always been a crafty person. I knit, spin yarn, weave, embroider, make wearing and hair accessories and I have dabbled in sewing. 15 years ago I sewed a Princess Gown for my little sister for Halloween, but I haven’t done much garment sewing since then. I decided that I wanted to start sewing my own vintage clothes, because I want more and I don’t want to spend a ton of money on them from different stores all the time. I have found several pattern companies that have re released some of their vintage patterns from the 1940s and 1950s, so I decided to give it a go.  The first pattern that I have sewn is a Simplicity Skirt pattern 8446 from the 1950s. I also found a fabric store close to my house that sells fabric for $2.99 a yard, not just some of the fabric but ALL of their fabric. It’s called Affordable Fabrics and they have stores in Uncasville, CT and Rocky Hill, CT.

I was a little nervous about sewing this pattern but it was actually really easy and it has POCKETS! I only had to cut out 4 pieces of fabric and it had you use ribbon for the waist band. Next time I sew this pattern, I will make a waistband out of the fabric because I want it to match the skirt exactly.

And here is the final product! The dress form I have is bigger then my waist size so it looks a little puffed out on the right side of the waistband, But you can also see my modeling it here. The yellow fabric that I used was a little see through, so I am wearing a white petticoat underneath, which is fine because it gives the skirt that 1950s full skirt look.

I have already started cutting out the fabric for the second skirt and I will share that when I finish it. What are your go to vintage sewing patterns?

Outfit of the Day

Outfits of the Day, May 21st to 25th

The weather continues to be back and forth. Some days were nice (mostly) but some days were chilly. I can’t wait for it to be 70 degrees when I get up in the morning, so I don’t have to worry about a sweater anymore for the mornings and then get hot in the afternoon. I did not wear vintage on Tuesday this week because it was rainy and cold, so I wore a modern trouser and blouse (I didn’t take a picture because it was boring). I still need to invest in some 1940s trousers for days like this.

Today I finally got to wear a true vintage skirt from the 1950s that I found at The Vintage Market in Salem, CT at the end of March.

I was off from work today and it was a beautiful, warm, sunny day so I wore a dress that I wouldn’t wear to work normally. I got to spend some time in the ward with my dog, which was nice! And of course I can never take a picture at home without her at my feet!

Outfits of the Day May 14th to 18th

The weather was very weird this week, not the warmest and raining and cloudy mostly. The 80 degree weather we had two weeks ago was a tease! I actually had to wear thicker cardigans a couple times this week. We’re also at that weird in between stage where its too warm for my thick, wool vintage swing coats, but not warm enough to wear no nothing outside.

Monday, May 14, 2018

It was a chilly, grey day so I wore 3/4 sleeves and a grey skirt that has been sitting in my closet unworn for a few months.

Today it was chilly again, so I wore a black knit cardigan, but I took it off for the picture because I liked the outfit better without the cardigan. I’m taking advantage of wearing these turbans while its chilly to keep my head warm. Once it gets hot I won’t be able to wear them for a while, sadly. This button up top by Banned Retro is a great staple for vintage outfits because it comes in several different colors as well and you can mix and match with different skirts and pants.

So I wore green two days in a row! But it’s a different shade of green so that’s ok right? I love the fit of this dress and how the skirt flares out just at the bottom. This dress comes in multiple colors on Amazon and I am definitely going to have to go back and order more colors, especially since its less than $35. Today was accessories day for the Instagram Vintage Fashion Challenge so I had to wear this awesome hair flower clip. I need more flower clips in my life!

Today I was loving my outfit. I’ve worn this dress before, but only by itself. Today I paired it with a cropped cardigan because it’s chilly again. I LOVE the way this outfit looks! I need more Heidi dresses with cropped cardigans! The Red in the Cardigan doesn’t match the red on the dress exactly, but I’m probably the only one that notices lol.

This weekend is supposed to be raining and crappy again, so it will be interesting to see what I put together for outfits. Next week starting Monday though we are supposed to have sunny weather in the 60s and low 70s all week, so I am excited for the outfit possibilities. If you want to check out this weeks prompts for #thevintagefashionchallenge on Instagram my username is sparkleshan, the pictures are different then my outfit pictures in this post.

Outfit of the Day

Outfits of the Day May 12th & 13th

Saturday was my college graduation and I really didn’t know what to wear! It took me forever to decided. I wanted a dress or skirt with pockets that I could put my phone in since I couldn’t carry my purse during the graduation ceremony, but all the dresses that I wanted to wear didn’t have pockets! Honestly, it is my opinion that all vintage style dresses and skirts (swing ones anyway) should have pockets! They are so convenient!

Saturday, May 12, 2018

I finally decided on this dark blue dress for my graduation. But alas I didn’t get any pictures of me just in the dress because I had my cap and gown on most of the day. I will have to get a picture next time I wear it. But you get a picture of me at graduation, ha!

Today was Mother’s Day and I started the day off right by attending Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with my daughter. It’s fun to have something in common that we can both do together, that is healthy for you. It’s hard getting your teenager to hang out with you and my daughter really loves BJJ, which makes me happy! Then we spent some time with my mom and went out to a late lunch. I wore my favorite color pink!

I promise I will get a picture of the dress I wore for graduation. It is still clean so I’ll probably wear it to work this week! Also I decided I need more pink vintage clothes in my life!

Outfit of the Day

Outfits of the Day May 7th to 11th

This week was only in the 60s compared to last weeks 70s and 80s sadly. Luckily they have not turned the AC on at work yet, so I am not freezing. The weather did give me the chance to wear some things that I probably won’t wear a lot in the summer. It’s also the second week on the Vintage Fashion Challenge on Instagram that I am participating in and this week was different colors each day.

Monday, May 7, 2018

Ok so I did wear the same cardigan today, as yesterday, but I have been wanting to wear this outfit combination for a while. And it was a little chilly this morning so it was a good excuse to wear it again, besides no one at work saw me wear it yesterday anyway, haha. And I feel like this week is the last time I can wear this grey tartan dress until summer is over, so I went for it!

Today’s color for the vintage fashion challenge was Yellow/Orange. I only have one dress that is yellow with blue designs on it, but I wore that last week. I totally forgot I had this orange top, I bought it before I was wearing vintage full time and I didn’t really consider it vintage at the time, but I think it can be pulled off as vintage, paired with a swing skirt like I did here.

Today I was home in bed all day with a horrible migraine, so I did not get dressed up. But for purposes of the Vintage Fashion Challenge on Instagram, I did a throw back to my St. Patrick’s Day Outfit. The color for today was green. It’s hard to see it this picture but my petticoat is also green.

I got to wear a new dress for the first time today! I have been excited to wear this dress today, because it screams ultimate 1950s house wife to me, I just forgot to wear my pearls! This dress was another great Amazon find and I am really impressed with the quality on the dress for less than $40 plus free prime shipping!

Today’s color for the Instagram Vintage Fashion Challenge is special to me, because it was my Nanie’s favorite color. Purple! She had so many purple clothes, it was so cute. I only have two vintage dresses in purple and I think its time I added more to my collection! Today’s dress is yet again another score from Amazon. I am amazed at the amount of good quality vintage inspired dresses I can find on Amazon for decent prices. This dress was less than $25 and free shipping with Prime. If you really want to dress vintage but you have a limited budget like me, Amazon is definitely a great place to look. Today I remembered to wear my Nanie’s pearls and I’m wearing one of her brooches too.

I am really liking this Instagram Vintage Fashion Challenge because its making me think about what I am going to wear ahead of time, rather than waiting until that morning to try and scrabble to pick something out. I’m excited for next weeks Challenge and to share it with you all.
